Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation primarily deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders, injuries, and pains related to the musculoskeletal system (bones, cartilage, skeletal muscles, ligaments, joints, and nervous tissue). Additionally, it implements rehabilitation to individuals with disabilities who have impairments related to diseases of other systems. The aim is to maximize their existing capacities, reduce dependencies, and enhance their quality of life.
The medical branch that performs treatments based on the data obtained from the examination and tests of the patient includes medication therapies, injection procedures (such as soft tissue, joint, spinal, and nerve blockades), applications of physical therapy devices (heat, light, electrotherapy), massage and manipulation, taping and exercise applications, lymphedema treatment, spa therapy, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, swallowing therapy, patient education, orthotic-prosthetic applications, assistive technology applications, and advanced technology-based rehabilitation practices (such as robotic rehabilitation, virtual reality).
In the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, patients can receive treatment either on an inpatient basis or through outpatient visits to the hospital, depending on their needs.
